Are veneers right for me?
There are a number of reasons why porcelain veneers are placed for patients. Porcelain veneers are a small, thin restoration fabricated in a dental lab by skilled technicians. Veneers are most often used to correct slight mis-alignments of front teeth, restore mild to moderately chipped front teeth and cover discolored teeth. Veneers usually cover only 3/4 of the tooth structure. They are bonded to the teeth with tooth colored cements. They are very durable and because they are made of all porcelain they appear very natural.
What should I expect when I have my veneers done?
Veneers are a very meticulous process that requires an artistic eye, a skilled dentist and highly trained lab technician. Typically veneers take a minimum of three visits. The first appointment is to gather preliminary records and photographs. This is the time to discuss with your dentist your expectations. This is an important appointment to communicate openly with your dentist so he has an opportunity to advise you if your desires are not going to be realized with veneers. You may have to consider another option because our doctors want you to be happy with your smile results. If veneers are your best option, the lab will construct a model of your new smile. This model is made of wax and will be used to make your temporary veneers.
At your second appointment, the teeth are very reshaped for the porcelain veneers. Your dental team will gather impressions and other records for the laboratory. Finally, your dentist will construct temporary veneers for you to wear while your case is being completed. Some sensitivity is normal during this time.
Your third appointment is when the dentist will cement the porcelain veneers and make final adjustments. If your veneers are not fitting properly your dentist might have to send the case back to the lab for adjustments. Finally, after the veneers are cemented, it is best to have an impression taken for a custom occlusal guard to wear while you sleep. Most people do grind their teeth at some point while sleeping and this could damage your new veneers.
It is best to allow for at least six weeks for your veneer case to be completed. So, if you have a special event be sure to plan ahead and be patient during the process. At Alameda Dental Care it is our desire to provide the best cosmetic results for you and often this takes time.
What is the difference between in-office and take home whitening methods?
There are several ways to whiten your teeth. Our Tempe dentist office offers several methods of teeth whitening.
In-office whitening is a popular option to brighten your smile- This method involves spending about one hour of time with us in our relaxing office. One of our highly trained staff, under the direction or your Tempe dentist, will place protective barriers around the gums, lips, cheeks and tongue. A whitening gel is placed on the teeth and some systems use a light that activates the gel. The gel is removed and replaced every 10-15 minutes for 45 minutes. The gel is then rinsed and all protective barriers are removed. A fluoride treatment is applied to the teeth as the final step. Most patients enjoy 4-5 shades of lightening. Now, THAT is dazzling!
Take-home tray whitening- This method involved two short appointments with our office. The first appointment we will take impressions of your teeth. These impressions are made into models of your teeth. We then make custom whitening trays just for you. When the trays are ready (usually in about one week) you must return to our friendly dental office to pick them up. We will give you instructions on how to use the whitening materials and how to care for your trays.
Zoom pens (take home method) - This method is a fairly new method for whitening. The whitening gel is housed in a pen-like container. The patient applies the gel to his or her teeth each day via a brush located at the end of the pen. These "pens" are available to you in our office.
Any tooth whitening method will most likely cause some level of sensitivity. The sensitivity appears to be directly related to the time you are exposed to the products. Therefore, the in-office method yields the shortest duration of sensitivity because you are exposed to the product for 45 minutes. Most patients report sensitivity for 24 hours. The take-home methods must be used for 7-10 days to see results and therefore expect your teeth to be sensitive during the 7-10 days. if you have questions about whitening your teeth, please do not hesitate to call our friendly office.
